The grants were awarded to Allegan County Area Technical Education Center, Grand Rapids Community College – Lakeshore Campus and Thompson M-TEC/Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD). The equipment will help improve or expand area training programs for health care and automation.

“Our training providers are educational catalysts for the ongoing development of our local workforce,” said Jennifer Owens, Lakeshore Advantage President.  “As lakeshore companies continue to grow and expand, the need for a trained workforce becomes more pressing. The Michigan Workforce TEC Grant Program helps ensure our training providers have the appropriate equipment to help workers and students achieve the credentials and skills needed to be successful in today’s marketplace.”

Among the three training providers awarded funds is Allegan County Area Technical Education Center (ACATEC) which offers 19 technical training programs as well as vocational training opportunities for students with special needs. Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) – Lakeshore Campus was awarded $49,875 which will be used to purchase equipment that will allow for advanced automation training for the local workforce. These funds will also provide certification opportunities under Smart Automation Certificate Alliance (SACA) and FANUC certifications. This equipment will be housed at GRCC Lakeshore campus in Holland Charter Township.

“GRCC values our collaboration with Lakeshore Advantage, Holland area employers and the MEDC to give local residents the ability to gain skills they need for today and for the future,” said Julie Parks, Grand Rapids Community College’s Executive Director of Workforce Training. “Industry 4.0 adoption is strong in this region, and this additional equipment is another piece that allows GRCC to make sure the workforce is ready to produce products that make Michigan a manufacturing leader.”

Thompson M-TEC/Ottawa Area ISD was also awarded $49,875 which will be used to purchase equipment to train on a FANUC/Miller ARC Robotic Weld Cell and offer FANUC specific certifications in robotic welding processes.  This equipment will be housed at the M-TEC center located in West Olive.

08/23/2022 // OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Lakeshore Advantage announced today a call for Business Stabilization projects as part of its role as the Ottawa County American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding bucket manager. Workforce Development and Access to Technology have been identified as priority funding focus areas.

“The business stabilization funding is critical to support our local businesses as we continue to emerge from the pandemic”, said Jennifer Owens, President of Lakeshore Advantage. “The funding priorities that we established, workforce development and access to technology, target two issues that will keep Ottawa County businesses competitive today and in the future. We are eager to see the transformational programs and partnerships that will result from this investment in our local community and economy.”

Priority business stabilization focus areas were selected based on Lakeshore Advantage’s ongoing research, responses to the Ottawa County Citizen Survey and input from the Business Stabilization Advisory Board. Recommended projects will be sent to the Ottawa County ARPA Task Force. Pending approval, selected projects will continue to the Ottawa County Board Finance & Administration Standing Committee and the Board of Commissioners for final funding determination.

Metal Flow Expands In Holland Charter Township

08/19/2022 // HOLLAND, MICH – Metal Flow, a worldwide leader in deep draw and progressive die stamping, is investing $7.2M into a 60,000-square-foot expansion in Holland Charter Township. Lakeshore Advantage, the economic development organization that assists employers with growth opportunities in Ottawa and Allegan counties, connected the company with local resources on this project.

“Manufacturing is the heartbeat of our economy. Metal Flow is a great example of a future-focused company, expanding to make investments in new technologies that will help secure its prosperous future,” said Jennifer Owens, Lakeshore Advantage President. “Congratulations to Metal Flow on their continued success.”

This expansion adds 60,000 square feet of space in a new facility adjacent to their existing facility in Holland Charter Township and will create 10 new jobs.

“As a global supplier of technically sophisticated products, Metal Flow has experienced growth and made investments in new technologies,” said Kelly Springer, Metal Flow CEO. “That growth and investment, along with anticipated future growth, resulted in the need for additional square footage. After evaluating several locations within North America, Metal Flow chose to expand on property purchased years ago and leverage the talented workforce currently located in Holland, MI. Our new facility will have light manufacturing, robotics, automation, and logistics to enable continued support of existing and new customers.”

Holland Charter Township is supporting this project in the form of a 12-year Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption that was approved last night.

“Holland Charter Township is pleased to support the expansion and investment Metal Flow is making in their facilities,” said Steve Bulthuis, Holland Charter Township Manager.

John is a dedicated member of the community. John is part of the board of directors for the Fearless Family of Churches, which includes three churches in west Michigan. John is also the current President of the board for the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. John also co-authored the book, Become Unmistakable, with his partner and CEO of EV Construction, Mike Novakoski.

You have years of senior-level leadership experience. Who are the people who have had a profound influence on you and your leadership style?
I am truly blessed to have many great leaders in my life.  My business partners are my primary source of leadership influence.  The three-partners senior to me are all about ten years apart in age which has given me the unique opportunity to model and learn from leaders in various stages of their careers and personal lives.  Having mentors, “out in front” of me in life has been an essential part of my growth.

I also need to recognize my father.  He is retired now, but was one of the most respected leaders that I have ever known.  He has influenced my professional development just as much as my personal development. He continues to influence my life from his new home in Arizona, but I am also reminded of his influence every time I run into one of his many former co-workers or vendor partners.

EV Construction is consistently voted one of West Michigan’s Best & Brightest Companies to work for. Talk to us about organizational culture. What are some values that you and your team live by?
In 2020 we celebrated 75 years in business and rebranded from Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals to EV Construction.  Rebranding gave us an opportunity to reflect our overall brand, culture and values. Our new tag line, “Built Around People” says it all for us.  It’s a simple tag line on the surface, but it has many layers.  First and foremost, we are a people-centric organization.  We focus first on our employees and their families.  We believe that when our employees are happy, they will naturally create happy customers and partners.  This high value in people drives the way we manage safety, vendor relationships and almost everything we do in our construction operations.

From renovating a mail truck into an ice cream truck to establishing a ‘Shark Tank’-style kids’ program, you and your team are constantly doing exciting things. What part of your work currently excites you?
I must give credit for these idea to Mike Novakoski, our CEO. He loves to have fun and remind the team of the little joys in life (like a good ice cream sandwich on a hot day). Making time for fun in the workday is one of the biggest lessons that I have learned from Mike.

All work environments are stressful in some way. Construction can be particularly challenging.  Introducing fun, exciting and unexpected events in the normal course of business reminds us that there is joy in working hard with a great team.  Programs like “Y.E.S.” (the Young Entrepreneur Scholarship) connect the families of our employees to our business and it reinforces innovation and creative thinking.

Our new “Sweets and Treats” ice cream truck represents the tremendous gratitude we have for our partners and clients.  Handing out ice cream at a groundbreaking or at a project site is a simple gesture to show how thankful we are for the people we work with and build for.

Without programs like these, the world can quickly become very black and white.  We prefer to work in a colorful world!

What is a book that you’ve read or a resource that you use to help you continually grow as a leader?
I have been a journey since 2017 to read 100 books before I turn 40. I have been reading a wide range of books from classic literature to biographies.  Two of the most influential books I have read so far are the biographies of Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Politics aside, both leaders shared a similar attitude towards hard work and perseverance which has been particularly influential in my professional life.

Can you share why it is a priority for you to invest in economic development?
There is a direct connection between the success of our business and economic development along the lakeshore. Business growth requires space, and space is what we provide.  We also invest because the tools and resources offered by Lakeshore Advantage make us more successful.  They add direct value to our clients, and we get credit just for making the connection!  More indirectly, EV Construction invests in Lakeshore Advantage in order build a community of innovation and entrepreneurship on the lakeshore.  We believe building that type of community will attract the kind of talent that we will need to grow our business for the next 77 years and beyond.
